Born in 1930 in Texas, Sample was the mixed-race son of Emma (a hard-drinking black prostitute and gambler) and Mr. Albert (a wealthy white cotton broker and one of her tricks). He emerged from an abusive childhood an angry young man on a straight path to the penitentiary. By his early 20s, Sample was serving a 30-year prison sentence at Retrieve, a plantation-style prison known as "the burnin' hell." After a profound spiritual awakening, Sample's future changed dramatically.

In 1972, he was released after serving 17 years and soon received a full pardon and restoration of all civil rights. Sample went on to become the first ex-convict in Texas to work out of the Governor's office and to serve on the staff of the State Bar of Texas. In recognition for his work in the field of corrections and rehabilitation of ex-offenders, he received numerous high-profile humanitarian awards. Review
Acclaimed filmmaker Sean Hepburn Ferrer presents the life story of former convict turned do-gooder Albert Race Sample in the 2003 biographical documentary Racehoss. Sharing the name of Sample s enormously popular book, Racehoss begins as Sample relates to an audience his frightening and troubled upbringing, which started in the neglectful and abusive care of his prostitute mother, Big Emma. As an passive participant in his mother s dangerous lifestyle, Sample quickly developed into a social deviant in his own right, with one of his early formative experiences including his assault and stabbing of one his elementary school teachers. Shortly thereafter, Sample dropped out of school and was abandoned by age 12, leaving the young man homeless and a frequent traveler of the nation s railway system via boxcar. After a brief, yet tumultuous, stint in the army, Sample was sentenced to a 30-year prison term for an unidentified violent crime. After serving 17 years, he was paroled and found work in the Texas state prison system, and eventually turned his life around to become a high ranking official within the Texas Criminal Division. Racehoss was included in the program for the 2003 New York Independent Film and Video Festival. --All Movie Guide

These stories are worthy of Twain, Faulkner and Lardner. --Chicago Tribune

One of the most remarkable stories I've come across, perhaps the most remarkable is the story of Albert Race Sample, known as Racehoss. --Studs Terkel, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author

Review
"POWERFUL. ... As remarkable as Richard Wright's autobiography 'Black Boy.' Brilliantly set down in street language ... the stories vivify the personalities who filled Sample's life and dominate his memory. These stories are worthy of Twain, Faulkner, and Lardner."
The Chicago Tribune

"A TIMELESS CLASSIC. If you accept RACEHOSS in the right spirit, it will blow your mind."
The San Antonio Express-News

"Of the most remarkable stories I've come across, perhaps the most remarkable is the story of Albert Race Sample, known as Racehoss. This book is more than a searing indictment of the Southern prison system. It is an outcast's eloquent testament to life."
Studs Terkel
Pulitzer Prize Winning Author

"Sample's book makes hell vivid. There are many unforgettable moments in his account of his prison years. ...  But the book also is warmly funny.  The prisoners are brought to life through Sample's accurate ear for how people talk, and it's clear that humor is one of the means for surviving in hell."
The Dallas Morning News

From the Author
I WAS HEADED TO HELL ON THE DAY I WAS BORN.  BY THE TIME I STOOD SHACKLED AT THE BACKGATE OF THE TEXAS PRISON KNOWN AS "THE BURNIN HELL," I WAS READY.  I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT NOTHING OR NOBODY.  HELL WAS WHERE I BELONGED.  I CAME FACE TO FACE WITH THE DEVIL.  HE BLINKED AND I KEPT ON STEPPING.

Authors Sidney Milkis and Michael Nelson look at each presidency broadly, focusing on how individual presidents have sought to navigate the complex and ever-changing terrain of the executive office and revealing the major developments that launched a modern presidency at the dawn of the twentieth century. By connecting presidential conduct to the defining eras of American history and the larger context of politics and government in the United States, this award-winning book offers perspective and insight on the limitations and possibilities of presidential power. In this Seventh Edition, marking the 25th anniversary of The American Presidency's publication, the authors add new scholarship to every chapter, re-examine the end of George W. Bush's tenure, assess President Obama's first term in office, and explore Obama's second term.

Review "Weaving insightful treatments of major transformations of the presidency into a lively narrative that encompasses every chief executive, Milkis and Nelson have written an essential history of the office. Still going strong after a quarter of a century, The American Presidency has been a favorite text for generations of my students." -- Bruce Miroff "Milkis and Nelson's The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2014 is an outstanding introduction to the U.S. presidency. It is informative and crisply written. Students like it and it I find it very easy to teach from. It provides students the information they need on the history and development of the U.S. presidency in a format that is accessible without sacrificing intellectual rigor." -- David E. Lewis "The Milkis and Nelson text is an excellent example of how to ground Political Science within an historical setting and create a narrative of institutional development. It strikes a good balance between the presidency as an institution occupied by a strong singular personality and the presidency as the executive power of an entire country, growing larger as the country does as well. The chapters, while focusing on the iconic presidents, also do an effective job of framing presidential challenges within themes, such as war powers, hurdles in dealing with the bureaucracy, fighting for (or losing) authority within the political system, etc. The choice to begin with creating the constitutional president and then working through a chronological succession is beneficial for students to grasp how the institution has changed over time and just as importantly, why it has." -- Timothy Lindberg "I would not use anything else. Milkis and Nelson provide historical examples and interpretation of the important events in the history of the presidency and of how the presidency as an institution has changed over time. I don't think the book has any weaknesses. The writing is top notch. I've had only positive comments from students about the book." -- Kenneth Stevens

The History of Kuwait (The Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations)

Review

"[T]his comprehensive history of Kuwait spans from 3000 BCE, when the first settlers traveled through the northwestern coast of the Persian Gulf, to 2006 CE, when Kuwaiti women first voted in municipal elections. The book contains a thorough depiction of the country's geography and demography, tracing its evolution as a nation through its verious forms under different rulers and occupying countries. It also carefully addresses the current conditions, both social and political, of this small but wealthy country in the modern era, and includes a list of notable Kuwaitis." - Middle East Journal"The History of Kuwait includes information about the land and people, and the history of this area from ca. 3000 BCE, through independence, nationhood, invasion by Iraq in 1990, occupation, and liberation up to present day Kuwait." - Multicultural Review"Writing for students and interested lay people, Casey has penned an accessible analytical history of the Middle Eastern country of Kuwait. The material is structured similarly to other volumes in the Greenwood Histories of Modern Nations series, offering a timeline of historical events, a broadly chronological narrative that describes Kuwait's origins as a desert sheikhdom in the 19th century and its evolution through the present time, biographical information on notable people, a glossary, and a bibliographic essay." - Reference & Research Book News

This is a comprehensive documented history of Kuwait. Its really great if you want to know dates of the first settlers, how people emigrated form Saudi Arabia and the early conflicts of the tribes all the way to the discovery of petrol, how unjust Iraq's claim was over our land, pre-and post invasion days. The development of industry, and the negative effects of excessive subsidizing in the world's foremost welfare state. Yes, that what we are, a WELFARE state. I was disappointed however that the book didnt go into the detail i wanted (ya3ni it generally didnt name names and give the full story of immigration to our country) but it was very informative. oh, and it tells exactly what happened during the invasion, FOCUS ON APRIL GLASPI (US ambassador to Iraq before the invasion) PART ON JULY 25 1990 AND HER COMMENT TO SADDAM HUSSEIN AND YOU WILL SEE SHE SAID: " the US has NO OPINION on the Arab-Arab conflicts like your border disagreement with Kuwait". no opinion??? you swear?? and they invaded us less than a week later! draw your own conclusions! AAAND... unlike our social studies books books, it does give one instance of who killed who to get power. Get it if you are Kuwaiti, you should know this stuff! But dont forget, not all of his facts are set in stone. There was a lot that was missing from this book and i got a definite feeling that Casey was avoiding "controversial topics".
