As a new "Suzuki" parent, I was so delighted to discover Dr. Suzuki's book and philosophy - that anything can be learned. The Suzuki method is not so much about training violin prodigies as it is about developing what he calls "noble feelings" basically character: discipline, concentration, work ethic, values etc. What more can parents want for their child? This is not a scientific book -- it's obviously his opinion that "nurture" is more important than "nature" (i.e. talent is learned not something that you are born with) and there are some things he says that time has proven wrong (the part about the wolf-children for instance which later was revealed as a hoax.) However, I found his story and philosophy very inspiring and with many elements that made a lot of sense.I highly recommend this book for (and his attitude) for parents (and teachers) whether their kids are taking violin lessons or not.

This book by Shinichi Suzuki is part-description of the principles of his Talent Education method, part-snapshots of personal history, part-statements on his philosophy of life. It is written with great optimism and love for humane development of children into noble people. Based on his observation that all children speak their mother tongue fluently (and are thus highly capable to be educated in many disciplines) and on his belief that talent is not inherited but learned, Suzuki's method concentrates on creating the best environment for child development. His famous violin teaching method incorporates parent involvement, listening to the same piece many times and extensive practice, among others. Importance of memory training and good mentors (Einstein was one of Suzuki's) is stressed. Many real-life stories illustrate his points.By way of criticism, while themes of compassion and developing a noble character recur throughout the book, it takes some effort to piece it all together. The book reads like a series of short improvisations on the themes of love and rearing of children. The parts of personal history, for example, with the description of illness, war and Suzuki's father's starting violin manufacturing business, while interesting, do not blend with the rest of the book. A chapter entitled "If you think of something do it" has nothing to do with its title (there is a chapter that talks about people of action in his other book, "Ability development from age zero", which repeats many of the stories verbatim). Some bits of Suzuki's take on life's truths, such as "an unfair advantage leads to evil" sound out of place. In spite of some shortcomings, I would recommend this book. Not as a practical guide, but as an inspirational material for parents.

This isn't about Suzuki's pedagogy, it's about his philosophical principles, and his ideas about music education making people into better human beings ring true. It's a great reminder for any of us teaching those kids who are forced into it by their parents, that they will be fundamentally changed for the better, by experiencing the culture of learning to play an instrument. There are several truly inspirational anecdotes, such as the story of a young girl whose right side was near paralysed, and who overcame the neurological disorder and subsequently became a professional. Whether you're just starting your own studio or thinking about retirement, this book really helps to reaffirm why we teach music, why we're musicians, and just how much we can contribute to society in this role.

Shinichi Suzuki developed the Talent Education Movement, now known as the Suzuki Method for teaching music. However, this philosophy can be applied to all types of learning. This book is simply written but contains profound ideas about nurturing others, becoming a person of noble character, parenting ideas and teaching music. This is the third time I have read this book, but am underlining passages I didn't see before. Dr. Suzuki was an amazing man of noble character!

The book is an interesting peek into the life and philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki. There is some discussion of his teaching methods in the book, but the majority of the book is short anecdotes from Suzuki's life.Probably his fundamental educational point is that talent is not inherited, children are the fruit of training and environment. Any child can enter his Talent Education schools without a test, "because our schools are based on the premise that talent is not inborn, that every child acquires ability through experience and repetition".

I had heard so much about the Suzuki Method for learning music that I wanted to learn more about the man who started it all. Master Suzuki discovered a powerful truth: All Japanese children speak perfectly their language! He sought out to understand how this was achieved and then he designed a method by which the children could learn a second language (music) in the same way and with the same ease. The result is the Suzuki Method for learning music. I consider that all music teachers should study this method to be able to achieve more from their students. I highly recommend this book to all music teachers at all levels.

Read this and apply it to your own life, as much as for your kids and their musical education.Heartfelt and humble, Shinichi Suzuki offers, not only hope, but steps to follow to train each of us, whether it takes 500 times or 5,000 times.

Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed -- and What It Means for Our FutureBy Dale Jamieson

From the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference there was a concerted international effort to stop climate change. Yet greenhouse gas emissions increased, atmospheric concentrations grew, and global warming became an observable fact of life.

In this book, philosopher Dale Jamieson explains what climate change is, why we have failed to stop it, and why it still matters what we do. Centered in philosophy, the volume also treats the scientific, historical, economic, and political dimensions of climate change. Our failure to prevent or even to respond significantly to climate change, Jamieson argues, reflects the impoverishment of our systems of practical reason, the paralysis of our politics, and the limits of our cognitive and affective capacities. The climate change that is underway is remaking the world in such a way that familiar comforts, places, and ways of life will disappear in years or decades rather than centuries.

Climate change also threatens our sense of meaning, since it is difficult to believe that our individual actions matter. The challenges that climate change presents go beyond the resources of common sense morality -- it can be hard to view such everyday acts as driving and flying as presenting moral problems. Yet there is much that we can do to slow climate change, to adapt to it and restore a sense of agency while living meaningful lives in a changing world.

From Booklist
If one listens to popularity-hungry politicians and optimistic environmentalists, there is still ample hope for humanity to halt global warming in its tracks. Yet a growing number of atmospheric scientists are saying it’s already too late and the real debate now is over how the earth’s denizens can adapt. Jamieson, an environmental studies and philosophy professor at New York University, falls squarely in the latter camp, pointing out that, despite a last-ditch, internationally attended Copenhagen Climate Conference in 2009, worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions have only increased. Since, in his view, catastrophic ecological damage is a foregone conclusion, Jamieson here narrows the issues down to moral and economic concerns. One of his key arguments involves getting us all to acknowledge both our personal responsibility in creating this global crisis and our collective ability to still make a difference. Although not intended as a rallying cry for arresting climate change, Jamieson’s work is nonetheless an invaluable contribution to the dialogue about how to minimize the inevitable social and environmental devastation that looms large in our future. --Carl Hays

Review

"Jamieson's ethical approach deserves serious consideration, especially since it manages to take our relationship with nature seriously while avoiding the debate about whether the value in nature is intrinsic or instrumental... wide-ranging and ambitious" --Journal of Applied Philosophy

"he has a gift for translating complexities into simple, often arresting terms, and is able to make even familiar material seem fresh...The result is a book that is uncommonly accessible to nonspecialists, and will resonate even among those working in the trenches of climate policy, for whom works of pure philosophy often seem somewhat beside the point...This is sound advice not only for economists but for anyone writing about climate change. Reason in a Dark Time succeeds so well because Jamieson, with very few exceptions, practices what he preaches." --Ethics and International Affairs

"A book that does justice to the full tragedy and weird comedy of climate change is Reason in a Dark Time, by the philosopher Dale Jamieson. Ordinarily, I avoid books on the subject, but a friend recommended it to me last summer, and I was intrigued by its subtitle, "Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed-And What It Means for Our Future"; by the word "failed" in particular, the past tense of it. I started reading and couldn't stop...I'd expected to be depressed by "Reason in a Dark Time" but I wasn't. Part of what's mesmerizing about climate change is its vastness across both space and time. Jamieson, by elucidating our past failures and casting doubt on whether we'll ever do any better, situates it within a humanely scaled context."
-- Jonathan Franzen in The New Yorker

"An invaluable contribution to the dialogue about how to minimize the inevitable social and environmental devastation that looms large in our future."
-- Booklist

"This book is a must read by all who wish to bring reason to the challenges [of climate change] we are going to face very soon, whether we want to or not..." --Green Energy Times

"Jamieson provides a wide-ranging account, looking at the lack of political incentives to act and at the influence of organised climate denial...Jamieson concludes with some observations about things we can definitely do for the better right away (abandon coal), and with shrewd reflections on living with the knowledge that we flunked the climate test." --Times Higher Education

"A highly informative, wise, and thought-provoking discussion of some of the greatest problems that humanity faces, and of some possible solutions."
--Derek Parfit, All Souls College, Oxford

"Dale Jamieson is a philosopher and a realist. He was been working on climate change for a quarter of a century, alongside both scientists and policy makers. He argues that we are heading down a dangerous road and will likely have to face a much more difficult world. But he also argues that there is so much we can do individually and collectively to make a difference, and warns that the best must not be the enemy of the good. This is a very thoughtful and valuable book and should be read by all those who would wish to bring reason to a defining challenge of our century."
--Professor Lord Nicholas Stern

"No one but Dale Jamieson could write an eminently readable book about climate change that ranges over the full sweep of the problem from the historical to the ethical, the scientific to the political. By placing this vexing issue into the broader context of the human condition, Jamieson guides the reader's mood from pessimism to optimism, and finally realism about our prospects."
--Michael Oppenheimer, Albert G. Milbank Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs, Princeton University

"Part requiem for our failed hopes and part vision for our uncertain future, this remarkably far-ranging work by the philosopher who has thought longest and hardest about climate change could inspire fruitfully radical reassessment of our attitudes toward the most far-reaching challenge of our lifetimes. The climate is changing -- can we?"
--Henry Shue, Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford

"Although Jamieson characterizes the Enlightenment faith in reason as a "dream," and recognizes that it is in particularly short supply in climate change policy, he is very much a man of the Enlightenment himself - hence his title, with its emphasis on reason, even in dark times, and his stated goal, which is to make readers think. Reason in a Dark Time succeeds admirably in this task. Although much of the ground Jamieson explores is well trodden, he has a gift for translating complexities into simple, often arresting terms, and is able to make even familiar material seem fresh." -- Ethics and International Affairs

"Forget learning about the science of climate change; read this book to learn about society and perhaps do a little bit of soul-searching. Summing Up: Highly recommended. " --CHOICE

"Reason in a Dark Time by Dale Jamieson (Oxford): precisely because it's the first book to be fully honest about climate change, it's the one book on the subject that stands a chance of not depressing you. It may even change your life." -- Jonathan Franzen, The Guardian, recommended as "Best Holiday Reads 2015"

Great ideas from W. Mosley once again. However...this Black man geeking out sexually over a white woman is becoming stale. Somehow I feel like I've been there, done that with his stories. The sci-fi portion is interesting though.

As usual, Walter Mosley has written an engaging and thought-provoking narrative. I love his writing style and his mastery of diverse genres. He's made me go back and review the Greek classics. Awaiting his next, sure-to-be exciting book.

This book, although different in perspective, is a story that needs to be told as many ways as possible. Truth and Love are the way we were meant to live and this Truth will keep bubbling up to confront us and confound Hate and Lies. Yes, it's a Messianic story, but it remains true in every telling; who or whatever God truly is he wants us to live together caring for one another.

This was my first Kindle book and since I want to read all of Walter Mosley's books, I decided to start on this series as well. Both stories were great, I liked The Gift of Fire over On the Head of a Pin, but both were good reads. Wish they were a little bit longer, but I didn't feel cheated, just didn't want the stories to end. HIGHLY recommended!

The ending was so abrupt I was searching for additional pages. Just like the other books in the series I read it front to back in one sitting. Futuristic imagery which closely paralleled current events. Walter did it again!!

I have read everything Walter Mosley has published to date that I can find to buy. Been reading him for many years and he is one of the all time great writers, regardles of the genre.

No detectives or private eyes this time; but still suspenseful and riveting. Worth the read and maybe a view into another world.

If you have read and love Mosley's work, especially his science fiction, this book is for you.2 novellas with science fiction fantasy themes which are typical Mosley fare. They are both well written, easy and fast reading. Head of a Pin was more fantastic and shorter. Not nearly as out there as The Wave which is the only Mosley book I did not care for. The Gift of Fire is hopeful, positive and dare I say spiritual; the author seems to be in a good place, personally and this may portend a change in direction in his writing. If you are not a Walter Mosley fan, this is not for you. You will be better served to start with one of the Ezekiel Rawlins mysteries. I recommend Black Betty or Devil in a Blue Dress.
