As the grandson of Italian immigrants who didn't hear a lot about why my family came here from southern Italy I was looking for a book that would fill in some of the blanks. This book does that and more. It goes in depth about immigration, why Italians, especially southern Italians came to America, where they settled, their lives here, the good and bad times. It covers the history of Italy and tells why the unification of Italy caused such a mass migration of people to the US. Mangione goes deep into the oppression and hatred Italians faced, not only from other nationalities but from fellow Italians, Covering the period from the Revolution to the 1990s you read about common, everyday people trying to make a life here, and about the ones who became famous and are household names. A great book, one that makes me proud to be Italian-American.

This book is a history which is also a good read. Very strong on early immigrant experiences up to the early 1900's. It gave me a perspective on those who preceded me to the US and the hardships they endured as the lowest-on-the-totem pole for decades. It is also a history of the United States and how it treated its newcomers (shamefully). This book is strong on the labor movement. That said, I must comment that the book falls flat on post-WWII history of Italian-Americans. It devotes scores of pages to barely-published poets and barely-known niche authors. It goes on and on with movie reviews. But there is no discussion of Italian-Americans in the hard sciences and medicine (Enrico Fermi has NO mention). The singer Madonna gets more print that SCOTUS Justice Antonin Scalia. And Italian-Americans' most pervasive contribution to US culture after WWII - cuisine - is not discussed at all.I recommend this book. But if you skip the last third, you won't miss anything.

I grew up in a large Italian family in Massachusetts. I always had a feeling of pride for being an American of Italian descent but I never knew very much about Italian History. After reading this I felt as if I had discovered myself and a stronger sense of who I am came into being. I was amazed at how much the Italian people contributed to this country. We are not all mobsters or priests as the media has portrayed us. We came for a dream of a better life. We assimilated and prospered. God Bless America!

As a New Yorker (originally) and someone interested in the immigrant experience in the USA, this book is a good read. I do feel that the authors, both Italian, are defensive about the bad "rap" Italians have experienced in this country and maybe they are right to be defensive. But I did learn things I never knew e.g. Italian men only go to church on special occasions. They associate the church with their oppression because the church sided with the wealthy class in Italy.I had some difficulty reading this in terms of the way the chapters are arranged. The timeline goes back and forth depending on the subject matter of the chapter. At times I felt confused, I felt as if I read this in another part of the book. With this in mind I'd recommend this if you don't know much about the Italian/immigrant experience and want to know more.

Being a first-generation Italian-American on my father's side, I have to say I have read many books and memoirs, heard many stories and tales over my lifetime, of the experience of immigrants leaving the mezzogiorno to the United States. This is an astounding collection of personal remembrances that holds tightly to the strength, the optimism, the hard work, the love, and the persistence of a huge group of people- mostly poor and uneducated- who came to a foreign land and helped to build it.Many of them joined our military during WW1 and WW2. They were more American than some Americans! They were American first and Italian second. My father, Felix Caracciolo, is even mentioned in this history. He was a perfect example of an immigrant boy "making good".La Storia captures the depth and breadth of the southern Italian migration to the United States with an honesty and beauty that no other work I have read has managed.

The four extra copies I ordered in December were Christmas gifts for other second-generation Italo-Americans. We greatly loved our immigrant ancestors - grandparents, aunts and uncles and innumerable groups of "commare and cumpari" in varying degrees of filiation to the nuclear family - and from them all learned an honorable way of life, steeped in the rich Italo-Greek culture of the southern Italian "Mezzogiorno". We learned early on, as children, in hours and hours of discourse at Sunday dinner, what courage and hardship urged them from Italy and what similar hardship met them here, what it meant to kiss parents goodbye and know you would never see them again in this life, never be able to have them embrace their grandchildren and finally hear of their passing by a letter two weeks after the fact. La Storia pays fitting homage to these men and women, our heroic forebears, in a context only a historian can encompass, a rapidly vanishing treasure as their succeeding generations are clueless and have nothing to contribute to vapid Western "culture" increasingly severed from its Greco-Roman moorings.I spoke our Calabrian and Neapolitan dialect fluently from childhood, cherished our culture as sacrosanct, followed our traditions - religious and culinary - with consummate fidelity and do so fervently and proudly to this day, some 110 years+ since the day my Grandpa set foot on Ellis Island in "Nova Yorka". La Storia filled in the blanks - not only undisclosed details of life there and then here, and the fundamental philosophical / religious mindset underpinning their very strict codes of morality and family, but the virtually unknown history of the Italians here [OK - so they were from north of Rome and very questionably "Italian" in our eyes, but...] in America since the Revolution. A riveting read!

This book can teach a lot. There are short lessons on just about everything drawing. Leonardo Pereznioto is a famous colored pencil and graphite and charcoal artist. He famous on you tube for his awesome 3 dimensional drawings that a extremely life like. He covers a list of materials that he uses and recommends. He has short lessons on things like light and perspective and they all have diagrams. He doesn't spend a whole lot of time teaching you how to draw in general but gives a few basic lessons so you can achieve those life like 3d drawings he's so famous for. The book contains a very good amount of drawing subject matter which are all diagramed and easy to follow along. Things that artists struggle with like metallic objects, glass, and water. This includes things like underwater drawings, a glass of water, and water drops. He also gives lessons on two gemstones. I highly recommend this book for any one who is a fan of his work or if your not familiar with him, then anyone who wants to learn to draw some more difficult objects to depict. He makes it really easy to learn and you walk away with a lot more knowledge on theseach subjects. I do think you might like to have some art experience but he makes it so that it's not really required. I just loved doing his projects. They were lots of fun. Sorry my pics are all sideways I didn't think to turn the camera the otherway.

Leonardo has produced a great book with step by step examples of how to draw realistic gemstones, water drops, rocks, flowers etc. It makes a great resource of ideas to improve you drawing techniques, and has a good section on materials and how to use them to the best advantage.

I got this book because of watching his videos on You Tube. I have already finished two drawings and I am very happy with the outcome. I am somewhat a beginner and if I can do it I think anyone could. It is very informative and I think that anyone who is looking to learn a bit more should get this book

The book includes doing crystals, glass, rocks, gemstones. I think it's okay but am not super impressed, some of the examples are very good, but some of them seem just so-so compared to other artists' examples. I don't think this is a book for beginners, think if you're new to colored pencil you would be better served by buying something that concentrates more on techniques and has more of an overview.

This book is probably ok, I feel it still lacks the technique into realistically drawing and it's jumping from one material to another material. I wish it can focus on colored pencil only and not all type of medium because as a beginner we don't want to spend too much money on getting different types of materials. The emerald gen tutorial is a failure, the chrome sphere is alright.

This is one of the best books on the market for jewelry designers who want to do more than just draw pictures of their designs! It's highly detailed without being boring like some books. They teach you how to create detailed renderings so you can bring your designs to life. It also shows how to create not only in different textures, but also in different metals! I find this book to be engaging, creative, and great for beginners and experts alike.I can't say enough about this book, I'm at a loss for words!

I have watched Leonardo Pereznieto on YouTube for several years. It is a well laid out course of study starting with materials and techniques, followed step by step by tutorials. I am doing the tutorials as I have time, and they are very clear and easy to follow. I am setting up object to do my own afterwards. This book will really help you draw what you see whether you are a beginner or more advanced because we all struggle to get it right. I am particularly interested in his lessons on gem stones and metal as I make jewelry. This is a very nice addition to my art library

I was disappointed with the book. Other than the cover sphere example the other art examples are second rate in quality. Not like the stunning examples you see posted by many artist on line.

The OrganismBy Kurt Goldstein

foreword by Oliver Sacks Kurt Goldstein (1878-1965) was already an established neuropsychologist when he emigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1930s. This book, his magnum opus and widely regarded as a modern classic in psychology and biology, grew out of his dissatisfaction with traditional natural science techniques for analyzing living beings. It offers a broad introduction to the sources and ranges of application of the "holistic" or "organismic" research program that has since become a standard part of biological thought.Goldstein was especially concerned with the breakdown of organization and the failure of central controls that take place in catastrophic responses to situations such as physical or mental illness. But he was equally attuned to the amazing powers of the organism to readjust to such catastrophic losses, if only by withdrawal to a more limited range that it could manage by a redistribution of its reduced energies, thus reclaiming as much wholeness as new circumstances allowed.Goldstein's theses in The Organism have had an important impact on philosophical and psychological thought throughout the twentieth century, as evidenced in the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Georges Canguilhem, Ernst Cassirer, and Ludwig Binswanger.

From Publishers Weekly
In this age of computer-based, reductionist models of the human mind, Goldstein's (1878-1965) pioneering statement on holistic health, written in 1934 in Holland, where he emigrated to escape Nazi Germany, is welcome, especially since the U.S. edition has been out of print for decades. An influential German neurologist and psychologist who taught and practiced medicine in the U.S., where he settled the following year, Goldstein stresses the seamless activity of the whole organism, arguing that there is no independent realm of "body" or "mind." Disease, in his system, is an expression of the disturbed relationship between an organism and its environment; recovery is a newly achieved adaptation, not merely a return to a previous equilibrium. Using illustrative material ranging from brain-damaged soldiers to repression of childhood memories, this dense, philosophically informed study reevaluates such concepts as anxiety, dread, instinct, drives, the unconscious and the nature of physical and mental illness.
